A Trappist beer is brewed by trappist monks at their monastry and should show the authenticity
stamp introduced in 1997 by the six monastries in Belgium still brewing trappist beers: Achel (the newest one since 1998),
Chimay, Orval, Rochefort, Westmalle and Westvleteren. Trappist beers have
a golden or dark colour, varying alcohol degree, are top-fermented with second or third fermentation in the bottle and all
have a slight fruity taste. These beers are considered as the world’s top quality beers!!! Since 2006, The La Trappe
monastry and brewery from Holland has been recognised as an authentic trappist brewery. The Saint-Sixtus monastry in Westvleteren
has absolute world reputation and its beers are in very high demand. Unfortunately, their beers are not commercially distributed
and therefore quite rare. The availability is unpredictable and supply is sporadic… but it is worth waiting.. Very very
recently, the Koningshoeven monastry from The Netherlands regained their authenticity label and are again considered as a
real Trappist beer.
